Alleged shoplifter struck employee
At about 11:35 a.m. Thursday at Menards, 6220 U.S. 6, Leamon Holmes, 50, of Gary, reportedly got into a struggle with a loss prevention officer who confronted him about shoplifting. Holmes was charged with felony theft and misdemeanor battery.

Burglars rip wires out of walls
Burglars cut and pulled out the wires of every outlet and the junction box during a home break-in. It is unknown when the burglary occurred, although a neighbor said he may have seen one or two people with flashlights near the house the night before. The copper electrical wire appeared to be the only thing taken.

Mobile home dryer, washer missing
Unknown culprits stole a washing machine and clothes dryer between 10 a.m. Wednesday and 1 p.m. Thursday from a mobile home on Rushingwater Drive, in Portage Township. The home’s front door was left unlocked. The loss was estimated at $650.
VALPARAISO
VPD records office closed for training
The records division of the Valparaiso Police Department will be closed Monday for training. Business hours will be shortened to 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, as the training continues, with normal office hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. resuming Wednesday.
