SCHERERVILLE — Indiana State Excise Police broke up a Super Bowl party Sunday at a local bar that involved more than $200,000 in illegal gambling by more than 400 people.
Excise police said Monday they received an anonymous tip that illegal gambling was going on at Spike’s Lakeside Inn, 21 E. Joliet St. The Schererville Police Department is at 25 E. Joliet St.
Excise officers seized three Super Bowl gambling boards, which each contained 100 squares costing participants $100 or $1,000 per chance. On Monday, a representative from Spike’s Lakeside Inn turned in $204,367 to excise police.
Police cited the bar on three charges related to violations of the state’s alcoholic beverage code Sunday, but said the investigation was ongoing and more charges against the bar and those who participated in the illegal gambling could still come.
Merrillville lawyer Paul Stracci, who is representing Lakeside owner David “Spike” Jaroszewski, said he had met with Jaroszewski on Monday but with the ongoing investigation, it was too soon to comment.
