Burglar entered through garage
An unknown person entered a home overnight Monday and stole items from a house and garage in the 400 block of Dorchester Court, in Shorewood Forest, according to the police report. The victim told police she believed the overhead garage door may have malfunctioned and stayed open, while the door between the garage and the house was unlocked. A lawn mower and a garage door opener were taken from the garage, and a laptop and purse from the kitchen table. Police said a credit card from the purse was used by an unauthorized person at 4:13 a.m. Monday in Lansing, Ill.
Rifle stolen from detached garage
A semi-automatic, .22 caliber rifle and ammunition were reported stolen overnight Monday from a detached garage in the 2100 block of Indiana 2, southwest of Valparaiso. The door had been pried open.
Doors missing from bank-owned house
Nine oak interior doors were reported stolen Tuesday from a foreclosed house in the 400 block of Meadow Wood Drive, located southwest of Valparaiso and southeast of Lake Eliza. A Centier Bank employee discovered the garage door open and the front door unlocked; he had not checked the interior of the house since the fall.

Citizens’ Academy begins April 2
Residents who would like to learn about the Valparaiso Police Department may submit applications to its Citizens’ Police Academy. Participants will meet officers and learn about their daily activities. Topics include investigations, state law, traffic laws and enforcement, crash investigations and patrol specialties such as K-9 presentations, the bicycle team, taser usage and firearms scenarios.
Classes will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning April 2, for nine weeks. Applications are due March 22 and are available at www.valparaisopolice.org and at the police station, at 355 S. Washington St. Limited space is available.
