VALPARAISO — The world-renowned David Sanborn Trio featuring Joey DeFrancesco and Byron Landham will close this year’s Valparaiso University Jazz Fest scheduled for April 15-20.
Jeff Brown, Jazz Fest director, said he is thrilled to have the trio as well as mid-week guest artists Dee Alexander of Chicago and Don Braden of Montclair State University in New Jersey.
Alexander is a jazz vocalist and songwriter who adds her own powerful styling to the American Songbook. She is known for her brilliant voice and complex improvisations.
Braden plays woodwinds, composes and arranges. He will be working with the Valparaiso University Jazz Band, which is also slated to appear. Braden was co-musical director of “The Cosby Show” for four years.
Sanborn is noted for his jazz saxophone and compositions and has a long list of albums to his credit. Clips of his songs may be heard at www.davidsanborn.com.
Tickets will go on sale in early March.
In addition to guest performances, Valparaiso University’s faculty and student ensembles, as well as high school jazz ensembles, will participate in the Jazz Fest.
On April 15 and 16 high school and VU jazz ensembles will perform. These performances will be held at 6 p.m. in the Harre Union Ballroom.
“One of the highlights of the festival is seeing both university and high school students interact with each other as well as visiting artists,” said Brown, who is also jazz studies coordinator at Valparaiso University. “On Monday and Tuesday (April 15-16) more than 250 high school students will perform in a noncompetitive setting. Thursday evening the University jazz ensemble will perform the challenging music of Don Braden. This is a once-in-a-life time experience for many of the students.”
