PORTER COUNTY
High, drunken teen batters mother
Allegedly high on alcohol and his mother’s prescription medication, Erik Oman, 19, was accused of repeatedly punching the 57-year-old woman in the face then kicking her as she lay on the floor, for not doing enough around the house, according to the police report. The woman, with multiple facial lacerations, escaped to a neighbor’s house in the Shorewood Forest subdivision at about 11:50 p.m. Wednesday.
When police entered the family home, in the 300 block of Devon Road, they found Oman with a knife in his hand and seated next to a half-empty bottle of rum and several loose anti-anxiety pills. He reportedly admitted taking five pills and to drinking throughout the day. Questioned about the battery, Oman reportedly said his mother “needed to learn a lesson.”
Oman was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor battery and underage drinking. He had a injury to his forehead the mother attributed to his falling on his face, which medics agreed was the likely cause, according to the police report. His blood-alcohol level was 0.34 percent, a level at which most people would lose consciousness.
