in safes stolen
Guns, ammunition, pills, a TV, a $2,000 watch and $7,000 cash were stolen between 11 a.m. and 8:20 p.m. Thursday from a home in the 600 block of West County Road 300N, about halfway between Valparaiso and Merrillville. The dead-bolted front door had been forced open, damaging the door frame and drywall, and multiple rooms had been ransacked, according to the police report.
A gun safe that was taken had held two automatic shotguns, a rifle, two pistols and a third, semi-automatic pistol. The stolen items were estimated to be worth about $13,400.
In another incident, four guns were stolen overnight Wednesday from a house in the 700 block of McCool Road in South Haven. The house is used as a business office, and when the owner of R.J. Scott Services, a service company for restaurants, returned at about 11:25 a.m. Thursday, he did not see any signs of forced entry but found a laptop computer on the ground by the front door and noticed the smell of burnt metal.
The guns, a passport, birth certificate and $2,000 cash reportedly had been taken from a large safe in a bedroom closet. Police said it appeared the safe was cut open with a metal grinder. He estimated the stolen items to be worth about $3,400. Police have information on a possible suspect in that burglary.
A 29-year-old woman allegedly battered the 26-year-old father of her child when the man — who recently was awarded temporary custody — attempted to take the child from her at about 3:25 p.m. Thursday at Porter Lakes Elementary School.
The victim told police the woman asked if she could come to the school to say goodbye to the child. When he said it was time to go, however, the woman started screaming and allegedly kicked him in the groin.
Police expect the Boone Grove woman will be charged with domestic battery, a felony because of the presence of a child.

Police said Steven Fitzgerald admitted losing his temper and battering his 18-year-old stepson at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday at the family’s home, in the 600 block of Baums Bridge Road, northwest of Kouts. A neighbor reported the disturbance.
The victim and a juvenile witness said the fight started when Fitzgerald accused the 18-year-old of feeding candy to Fitzgerald’s dog. The victim refused medical attention but had red marks and cuts on his throat, face and hands, police said. Fitzgerald is charged with felony strangulation and misdemeanor battery.

An attendee of Wednesday’s Boone Grove/Chesterton basketball game found a magazine with seven .380 rounds. The magazine was discovered in the bleachers at about 8:45 p.m., when the game ended. An officer spoke to a few juveniles who had been sitting in the area where the gun magazine was found, but they could not say who it belonged to or who else had been sitting there.
