Teen arrested for stealing from grandfather

A 19-year-old Rensselaer man and a 17-year-old friend were arrested for allegedly stealing scrap steel from the older teen’s grandfather.

The victim told police he was at his place of work nearby when, at about 3:10 p.m. Monday, a mail carrier told him two young men were taking things from his garage, in the 600 block of Chicago Street. They were still there, loading a pickup bed with approximately $400 worth of metal, when he arrived, according to the police report.

Jeremy Howard was arrested for felony theft, and the 17-year-old, from Wheatfield, was taken to the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center on the same charge.

Glock handgun stolen from unlocked vehicle

A Glock handgun with its holster was reported stolen between 8:30 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 a.m. Monday from an unlocked vehicle in the driveway of a home in the 100 block of Main Street. The loss is estimated at $625.

PORTER COUNTY

Cash, jewelry reported stolen during wake

During a wake, a burglar reportedly broke into the widow’s home on Alene Drive, southwest of Valparaiso, and stole $10,000 cash and jewelry. The burglary happened between 2:45 and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Footprints and other evidence show the culprit walked around the house and through the backyard, then broke through the rear man door to the garage.

PORTAGE

Underage woman arrested for stealing alcohol

Michelle Sabich, 20, who lives east of Portage, was arrested at about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday for felony theft after allegedly hiding two bottles of alcohol in her purse while at Wal-Mart, 6087 U.S. 6. Sabich also is charged with being a minor in possession of alcohol and for possession of marijuana, both misdemeanors.
