Scammer targets man seeking parts
A 86-year-old rural Porter County man, who is rebuilding a 1931 Studebaker, reported Wednesday he was scammed out of $1,400 when he tried to buy parts. The victim told police he placed an ad in the Hemming Motor News, and a respondent from California supposedly arranged to send him the needed parts in return for two money transfers to an account, in a third person’s name, at Bank of America. The transfers happened Feb. 11, but the parts never arrived and the victim can no longer reach the subject, according to the police report.
