CHESTERTON — Chesterton High officials are weighing whether to administer Breathalyzer tests at the May 4 prom to curb student drinking.
Principal James Goetz asked for the Duneland School Board’s advice at Thursday’s board meeting. Goetz said Monday he’ll revisit the matter with the board at its next meeting on April 10.
Goetz said if the board backs the move, the school will hold a parents open house to get more input.
Breathalyzer testing would also be conducted at the senior banquet on May 8.
Chesterton High’s student newspaper “The Sandscript” endorsed the testing, in lieu of the cancellation of the events.
Some students showed up at the school’s homecoming dance last fall after drinking. School officials became concerned enough about the issue that they cancelled a Valentine’s dance in February.
Goetz said he’s talked with Lake Central school officials about the proposed testing. Lake Central has been using Breathalyzers at student events since 2009.
