PORTAGE — Portage Police are investigating two robberies that happened Friday morning, possibly committed by the same person who robbed a gas station Wednesday.
At 4:48 a.m. Friday, a man dressed in dark clothes and with his face covered pointed a black handgun at the clerk of Zip Foods, at 5757 U.S. 20, demanding the cash from the register. The man also had the 32-year-old female clerk walk across the store to unlock the cigarette case, taking one carton each of Marlboro red and Newport green shorts.
The unknown man threatened to kill the woman if she did not hurry up, but he also apologized, saying he had to feed his kids, she told police.
A second armed robbery was reported at 5:29 a.m. at the Comfort Inn, 2300 Willowcreek, while officers were still reviewing surveillance video at Zip Foods. In that case, a man with a similar description demanded, “Give me all your money right now,” to the 60-year-old male front desk clerk. The clerk said the man appeared nervous, and that the hand holding the black pistol was shaking.
The third robbery by a man with a matching description was at 3:02 a.m. Wednesday at the Speedway at 5011 Central Ave.
The robber has been described as in his late 20s to mid-30s, 5-feet 10-inches to 6-feet 1-inch tall, with a slim to medium build.
