Man with teen passenger drove motorcycle at 120 mph
Jeffrey Burriss Jr., 32, of South Haven, was arrested on a felony charge of allegedly fleeing police with his motorcycle around 5 p.m. Monday. Police said Burriss did a wheelie at Indiana 130 and west County Road 475 then fled west at speeds up to 120 miles per hour, while swerving around other vehicles. A 16-year-old female, the daughter of Burriss’s girlfriend, was on the back of the black 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle. When forced to slow down for traffic on the Lake/Porter County Road, Burriss pulled into a parking lot and surrendered, police said. Burriss also was charged with misdemeanor reckless driving and driving with a suspended license; he was ticketed for having false plates on the motorcycle.
Grandmother told police of pot deals at Wheeler High School
A 16-year-old male’s mother and grandmother asked police to arrest him Monday and help him get drug and alcohol rehabilitation. The teen lives with his grandmother in Shorewood Forest, and on Sunday night, she found marijuana and drug paraphernalia in his backpack, she later told police. She kept him home from Wheeler High School on Monday because that is where he admitted buying his drugs, but they argued and he started banging his head against the floor, so she called for help. The teen fled, and police found him at about 11:45 a.m. near the baseball diamonds at Roxbury Road and west County Road 500. The teen, who has a history of drug arrests, was taken to the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Police are investigating the alleged drug deals at the school.
Outdoor furniture stolen from in front of store
A large number of outdoor wood furniture pieces were reported stolen over the weekend from in front of Inspiration Wood, at 642 E. Inspiration Road, east of Chesterton and near the LaPorte County line. The eight rocking chairs, four end tables and a two-person glider were taken from the business between 4 p.m. Friday and 8:30 p.m. Monday. The loss was estimated at $1,200, according to the police report.
1945 Ford tractor among equipment stolen from barn
A blue and gray 1945 Ford tractor, a camouflage 2004 Kawasaki Prairie ATV, a rebuilt lawn mower engine, engine hoist and two 20-gallon air compressors were reported stolen between Dec. 2 and Sunday from a barn in the 100 east block of south County Road 50. According to the police report, a fake security camera was broken and the culprit cut several chains, possibly using a torch, that had secured the tractor, ATV and the barn doors.
Inoperable dirt bike reported taken
An inoperable Honda dirt bike was stolen between March 24 and Sunday, according to a police report. The owner told police the bike was stored in a garage on west County Road 325, southwest of Valparaiso, and he discovered it missing when he went to work on its broken throttle and front brake.
Log splitter, post-hole digger missing from wooded property
A log splitter, a post-hole digger and a cart were reported stolen from a wooded property in the 100 west block of south County Road 350, in Porter Township. The owner told police Sunday that the equipment, worth about $900, was taken at an unknown time in the last three months.
