Portage preps for new street department facility

Updated: May 12, 2013 2:15PM

PORTAGE — Austgen Equipment of Lowell was awarded a $274,691 construction contract at a special meeting of the Portage Redevelopment Commission on Wednesday.

Austgen will grade and surface property to the east of the Portage Street Department, remove a large concrete pile and construct a berm around the perimeter of the site to prepare for storage of equipment and material tied to the construction of a new street department facility later this year.

This project is expected to take 30 days to complete, according to Public Works Director A.J. Monroe.

Commissioner Sue Lynch questioned the range of bids received for the project, noting the high bid was greater than $800,000.

Construction manager Scott Cherry of Skillman Corp. said much of the difference is due to the equipment that Austgen owns.

“Austgen is the only company in Northwest Indiana that has a mobile concrete crusher, so any other company would either have to subcontract with Austgen or use other means of removal of the concrete,” Cherry said. “If you don’t have the crusher, it’s not a very attractive job.”

Other bidders for the project were Dyer Construction, Reith Riley Construction and G.E. Marshall.
