Officials with the Porter County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday they have identified the body found Monday evening in Boone Township as Ruben Paredes, 32, from Akron, Ind.

Paredes’ partially decomposed body was discovered Monday in a ditch at County Roads 500W and 1000S. An autopsy determined the man apparently died from a gunshot wound and police were calling his death a homicide.

Akron Police Chief Tim Fleck said Paredes’ wife, Amber, reported him as missing in early February, and his department has had an open investigation into his disappearance since then.

The Porter County Sheriff’s Department contacted Fleck’s department on Wednesday when they learned of the missing person report, Fleck said, adding the search for Paredes has been “quite extensive.”

It is not clear where Paredes was when he was apparently shot to death.

“That’s still under investigation,” Fleck said.

Sgt. Larry LaFlower, public information officer with the sheriff’s department, said Paredes’ body had most likely been in the ditch in Boone Township, southeast of Hebron, since early February.

Akron is about 80 miles southeast of Hebron.

According to the website www.staceypageonline.com, which details news in Kosciusko County, Amber and Ruben Paredes had recently moved from Warsaw, Ind., to Akron, and Ruben Paredes went to Warsaw to meet with friends the night of Feb. 1.

A missing person report was filed with Akron police on Feb. 3, and Ruben Paredes’ car was found Feb. 5 in a business district in Chicago, in front of a church.

The sheriff’s department and the Akron Police Department are conducting a joint homicide investigation, and representatives from the sheriff’s department were in Fulton and Kosciusko counties Thursday.
