Burglary nets woman time served

Checking for open apartments among her neighbors and stealing their jewelry has meant a four-year sentence for a Valparaiso woman.

However, Rebecca Saliek, 33, will fulfill the sentence as time served since the Sept. 29 burglaries and then stay at Alice’s House, a halfway house in Valparaiso, once there’s an opening.

Porter Superior Court Judge William Alexa declined on Friday to sentence Saliek to parenting classes as part of her plea to Class C felony burglary because her crime didn’t involve parenting skills, although her child is in foster care.

When police questioned Saliek about the crime, she told them her car was being repossessed and she and her boyfriend were being evicted, court records state.
