Dr. Sridhar Mothkur, 62, of Chesterton, died at the scene of a crash where he was ejected from his vehicle at about 9:23 p.m. Tuesday.
Mothkur worked as a radiologist in Michigan City.
Indiana State Police said Mothkur’s 2003 Lexus was eastbound in the left lane of Interstate 94, just east of the eastbound scales, when for unknown reasons he hit the rear of a box trailer in the middle lane. The Lexus flipped multiple times and ejected Mothkur, who came to rest on the inner shoulder. The car continued to roll, going over the median wall, before landing on the inner shoulder of the westbound side of the interstate.
Mothkur was pronounced dead at the scene of blunt force trauma. It is believed he was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
The semi driver, William Lantis II, 42, of Michigan, was not injured. The 2000 Freightliner was hauling 6,980 pounds of auto parts; none of the load was lost in the crash.
Traffic was diverted off the interstate at Indiana 49 so police could reconstruct the crash and clean up the roadway. All lanes were open by 2 a.m. Wednesday.
