Camp will go on despite loss of federal funds

CHESTERTON (AP) — Organizers of a summer camp for children of military families say the program will go on this summer at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore despite losing federal funding.

Operators of Indiana Operation: Military Kids say they are confident they’ll raise the $22,000 needed for as many as 60 campers ages 9-18. The Dunes Learning Center and the American Legion had raised $1,335 for the camp as of mid-May.

Dunes Learning Center Executive Director Geof Benson says contributing money is a way to show appreciation to military members. Because of spending reductions, Indiana was not among the 23 states granted funding for camps by the Defense Department.

Eligible applicants must have a parent, guardian or sibling serving in the military or one who has been wounded or killed in action.
