Granddad disarms juvenile with knife
A juvenile male was arrested after admittedly charging at his grandfather with a steak knife at about 7:10 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect and the 57-year-old victim, of LaPorte, were at the suspect’s Valparaiso home when they got into an argument about whether to put boxes outside with the impending storm. The suspect reportedly punched the older man’s chest and shoulders before grabbing the knife; the grandfather disarmed him. The youth was charged with felony intimidation and misdemeanor battery.
Bank helps catch
alleged ID thief
A Centier Bank teller helped police capture a Florida woman who allegedly tried to cash a check written out to another woman, whose bank card and driver’s license she also had in her possession.
According to the police report, before Alana Gutierrez, 18, pulled up at about 1:45 to the drive-through at 1802 Calumet Ave., bank employees had been warned to look for someone attempting to use the identity of the victim, a 23-year-old Lowell woman.
When Gutierrez arrived wearing a blond wig and in a Florida rental car with a piece of paper over its license plate, the teller called police and told the suspect she could not cash the check because the bank’s computers were down. When officers stopped the vehicle a short distance away, an unknown man got out of the back seat and fled. Gutierrez was arrested on felony charges of fraud and forgery.
Burglar smashed up pawn shop
At about 3:30 a.m., an unknown man smashed the glass door and multiple display cases at Ameripawn, at 1415 Lincolnway, stealing 13 iPods, 8 Game Boys and an assorted of other small electronics. The total loss and damages are more than $4,000, according to the police report. Surveillance video showed the burglar took about two minutes to break through the door, using a tool he left at the scene. He was wearing gloves, a white baseball cap, a dark cloth over his face, a dark T-shirt over a light-colored long-sleeve shirt and dark pants. The burglar set off an alarm but was gone before police arrived.
Garage forced open, ATV stolen
A red 2012 Honda ATV, worth $10,000, was reported stolen between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday from a detached garage in the 1800 block of Georgia Street, in Center Township. The garage’s service door may have been forced open, according to the police report.
