Man used friend’s cash after overdose
Allegedly withdrawing $500 for heroin from a roommate’s bank account shortly after the roommate died could net a Valparaiso man three years in prison.
Ryan A. Herring, 31, is charged with Class D felony theft for the March 8 incident.
Herring called police about 8 p.m. that day and said he found John Crowe dead in morning after both had used heroin the night before, court documents state. He admitted that he first used Crowe’s vehicle to drive to purchase additional heroin and pills.
After Crowe’s survivors noted money taken out of Crowe’s account at 3:28 p.m. that day, police found Herring using the card on the surveillance tape for an ATM on Calumet Avenue.
Herring is being held in Porter County Jail without bond because he was being held on other drug-related charges.
