VALPARAISO — The city will be getting a Top Fuel Crossfit gym by summer’s end.
Garner Tullis, who owns Top Fuel Crossfit Merrillville, hopes to open the Top Fuel Crossfit Valparaiso by August at the U.S. 30 strip mall on the west end of town.
Tullis brought plans to convert two suites of the 2590 U.S. 30 mall into his gym, just north of the doctors’ offices in the former flooring outlet.
He said he lives in Valparaiso and wanted to open a franchise — part of an international chain — closer to home.
The gym specializes in cross fitness training using the core elements of weightlifting, powerlifting, gymnastics, and cardio based training, according to its website.
Tullis won’t do any exterior work to the building besides removing awnings and signs and putting up his business’s sign.
He plans to do some reconstruction work inside the facility.
That includes mostly removing walls to open up areas and adding bathrooms for both sexes that are compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
City officials made few suggestions on the preliminary plans and seemed amenable to what Tullis has planned so far.
