Updated: July 8, 2013 9:57PM

VALPARAISO — With the help of extra holiday patrols, 52 people were booked into the Porter County Jail on alcohol-related charges between July 3 and Sunday.

The busier-than-usual Fourth of July weekend included 30 people charged with drunken driving, 17 with underage drinking and five with public intoxication. These figures do not include juveniles.

Porter County Sheriff’s officers made the most arrests of any individual department, with nine for drunken driving and seven for underage drinking. Valparaiso followed with eight for drunken driving, three for underage drinking and two for public intoxication.

Indiana State Police, the Department of Natural Resources, Kouts, Ogden Dunes, Portage, Burns Harbor, Hebron, Beverly Shores and Chesterton police departments also made alcohol-related arrests.

While the majority of the alleged offenders face misdemeanor charges only, some are accused of felonies.

Pete Skoutaris, 32, of South Haven, was arrested at about 3:20 p.m. Saturday for misdemeanor drunken driving and felony driving despite having lost his license for being a habitual traffic offender. His arrest was made in the 700 block of Heritage Road in South Haven.

Christian Govert, 21, of rural Valparaiso, who has a prior drunken driving conviction and crashed into a tree at about 12:35 a.m. Friday at County Road 500W and Roxbury Road, is charged with felony drunken driving and misdemeanor leaving the scene of a crash.
