A 6-year-old boy remains in critical condition after he was buried under sand while visiting Mount Baldy at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on Friday afternoon.
Officials at Comer’s Children Hospital at the University of Chicago identified the boy as Nathan Woessner. Updates said Woessner continued to respond to commands as of Sunday morning.
Woessner’s family members told officials they saw him in a hole on the beach, later said to be about 11 feet deep, but couldn’t get to him before the sand collapsed on him. The hole was on a rise about 75 feet from the water. It took park officials more than three hours and heavy digging equipment to rescue Woessner.
The park closed Mount Baldy to the public during the weekend, and officials planned to decide Monday morning whether to reopen it. Bruce Rowe, spokesman for the park, said officials are investigating what caused the accident.
