PORTAGE — The Land Policy committee met Wednesday to review a draft application for funding designed to encourage cities to develop living centers and neighborhoods.
More than $400,000 over two years will be available through the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission starting in early October for projects that support the development of local living areas.
NIRPC land use director Eman Ibrahim said the funds would encourage development of downtown areas, encourage walkable living areas and support mixed land use.
The new application was reviewed by the committee, hoping to develop paperwork that can identify projects that best reach the goals.
Also, the committee discussed a new land development technique called green alleys, where underused alleyways are converted to walkways with green space instead of pavement.
