A coal bunker fire at the ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor plant was extinguished about two hours after it started on Monday afternoon and no injuries were reported.
ArcelorMittal spokesperson Mary Beth Holdford confirmed in an e-mail statement that the bunker serviced the plant’s coke battery operation.
Porter Fire Chief Lewis Craig Sr. said his department received a request for an engine around 1:15 p.m. In addition to Porter, firefighters from Burns Harbor, Chesterton, and Washington Township assisted the company’s Industrial Station 53 in putting out the fire.
The company is currently evaluating the damages and the possible impact on coke battery operations, which they expect to be minor, Holdford said.
