Garland Gaines, 67, of Portage, was taken to the hospital for injuries when he rolled a golf cart at about 5:25 p.m. Monday at Robbinhurst Golf Course, 383 W. County Road 875N. Gaines’ leg was pinned under the cart until other golfers lifted it off him.

Woman hospitalized, man arrested for battery

Thomas Cunningham, 32, was arrested at 10:19 p.m. Saturday for felony domestic battery and strangulation after a 29-year-old woman was brought to the Portage Hospital emergency room for multiple injuries, including a possible dislocated jaw.

A roommate of Cunningham and the victim and the roommate’s boyfriend told police the victim ran out to them when they arrived at about 9 p.m. in the 100 block of Harmony Terrace and said she had been battered. The victim reportedly lost consciousness twice during the altercation, although Cunningham told police the fight did not turn physical.

VALPARAISO

Woman got in van when man threatened to crash it

Called to a domestic disturbance at about 10:01 p.m. Saturday in the 300 north block of Morgan Boulevard, police found a 14-year-old girl watching several children. The teen had not seen her mother since the 31-year-old woman had followed her step-father outside during an argument a short time before.

When the woman returned, she said she had gotten into the passenger seat of her van after Christopher Wright, 34, allegedly threatened to crash it so she would not have a vehicle.

Wright reportedly then started driving and wouldn’t let her go until she promised not to tell police anything. Before that incident, Wright had seen a squad car parked outside the apartment and allegedly punched the woman in the face and threatened to kill her.

Wright was arrested at about 10:51 p.m., at a relative’s home, on felony charges of criminal confinement and domestic battery and misdemeanor charges of intimidation and driving with a suspended license.

SHOREWOOD FOREST

14 to face charges from drinking party

Seven adults and six juveniles were arrested for underage drinking when police broke up a party at about 11:22 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Warrick Circle.

The 22-year-old party host will be charged with furnishing alcohol to minors, a misdemeanor, but he was not immediately arrested. Instead, since their parents were out of town, police released the host’s brother, one of the arrested juveniles, to his care.
