Man in black seen before burglary
A burglar took jewelry, an Airsoft rifle and other items between 4 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Wednesday from an unlocked home on Canterbury Circle, east of Portage. The loss was estimated at about $600. During the investigation, neighbors told police a man was walking up and down the street while dressed in black and carrying an empty backpack.
Items stolen from backyard shed
Approximately $125 worth of tools were reported stolen from a locked plastic storage shed between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday behind a home at the mobile home park at 71 W. U.S. 6. The padlock also was taken, police said. After learning of the burglary, a neighbor reported seeing an unknown heavyset man, wearing a blue shirt, at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday between the homes.
Home swimming pool vandalized
A home swimming pool was found to have approximately $2,000 worth of damage, done between Sunday and Wednesday in the 400 block of Plymouth Road. Police classified the incident as criminal mischief.
Attempted break-in made at counseling center
An unknown person damaged the door and its frame overnight Tuesday at Porter County Family Counseling Center, at 794-A McCool Road. Police said it appeared someone attempted to pry open the door, although employees said there was nothing in the business that they could imagine anyone would want.
