Burning smell forces evacuation of Valparaiso High School; nothing found

Updated: September 11, 2013 12:41PM

VALPARAISO – Valparaiso High School was evacuated for about 45 minutes Wednesday morning after students and staff reported an unusual smell, similar to burning plastic or plastic foam, in a section of the building.

Superintendent Michael Berta notified families via the school corporation’s SchoolMessenger alert system that the school’s occupants noticed the smell about 8 a.m. After an inspection by the Valparaiso Fire Department, the Valparaiso Police Department and school staff, students and staff returned to the building.

“The source of the smell was not identified, nor was any evidence of burning found,” Berta said in the message.
