PORTAGE — Staff at the Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission will have their hands full preparing for a final vote on the Illiana Expressway.
The Transportation Policy Committee is expected to vote on adopting the Illiana on Dec. 3, and the full commission would vote Dec 12.
With only two months before that full commission vote on the toll road connecting I-55 and I-57 in Illinois to I-65 in Indiana, the commission is scheduling a reports and public comment period.
“Things are going to be pretty busy around here,” said Mitch Barloga, a staff member of NIRPC, after the committee meeting Tuesday.
Open public comments period begins Oct. 14 and last through Nov. 20. Public hearings will be held:
• Nov. 2: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., John W. Anderson Library at Indiana University Northwest, Gary.
• Nov. 5: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Lowell Middle School.
• Nov. 13: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., NIRPC office, Portage.
• Nov. 19: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., City Hall, Michigan City.
NIRPC Deputy Director Steve Strains said written public comments will also be accepted from Oct. 14 to Nov. 20. Previously submitted materials from before the public comment period regarding the new expressway will also be included.
South Shore maintenance
Joe Crnkovich of Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District said the South Shore is operating on one track this week for maintenance reasons.
Commuters on westbound trains 20 and 218 are taking a bus from Gary Metro Center into Millennium Station, skipping the Van Buren, Museum Campus and 57th St. stops.
Eastbound train 209 is being delayed, and trains 117 and 19 have a delayed departure. Train 205 is canceled, and Train 203 passengers are taking a bus from Millennium Station to Hegewisch.
Normal service should resume Saturday, Oct. 12.
