Illegal burning may have started house fire, official says

Updated: November 25, 2013 1:23PM

VALPARAISO — One person suffered minor injuries in a house fire that blocked traffic on U.S. 30 for about two hours Wednesday morning.

Valparaiso Fire Department Battalion Chief Les Abraham couldn’t release the name of the injured person, but said they had slight neck burns. The person was remodeling the vacant yellow house at 301 E. U.S. 30.

The house is west of Axe Avenue and Duffy’s Place.

The cause is likely an illegal fire that caught the siding and worked its way up to the roof.

“It looks like they were burning stuff they were taking out of the house, too close to the house,” Abraham said.

The fire department got a call about 10: 49 a.m.; normal traffic on U.S. 30 resumed about 12:30 p.m.
