VALPARAISO — A Gary man was arrested on a long list of felonies, including several firearms-related charges, after a woman was beaten at a Valparaiso apartment.

Kevin Brown, 20, is being held without bond in the Porter County Jail.

At about 9 a.m. Thursday, police were told a woman was screaming for help from an apartment at 1209 Chicago St.

As officers attempted to get in the front door, a man fled out the back. Police said the woman told them the man, whom she described as a friend, had battered her with a handgun. She was treated at Porter Regional Hospital and released.

Police said they obtained a warrant to search the apartment where the attack allegedly occurred, and they found a handgun, ammunition and a sawed-off shotgun.

Valparaiso police searched the area for Brown and also informed Valparaiso University police of the incident, because of the apartment’s proximity to campus. VU officers located Brown at about 10 a.m. at the U.S. 30 entrance to the university.

Brown was charged with: battery with a deadly weapon, a Class C felony; intimidation with a weapon, a Class C felony; possession of a sawed-off shotgun, a Class D felony; strangulation, a Class D felony; domestic battery with a child present, a Class D felony; criminal recklessness with a firearm, a Class D felony; domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor; and a probation violation.
