GARY — Angela Robinson moved from Mississippi to Gary two years ago with her four children when she got a job at an Illinois daycare center.

Robinson, who has an associate degree in education, lost that job when the school closed a year later.

“I felt stuck. I didn’t know what to do next,” she said. She took a job at McDonald’s across the street from where she lives. She has management experience in fast food and is trying to move up.

Throughout those challenges, her children found stability at the John Will Anderson Boys and Girl Club, where Thaddeus Simmons, 14; Tionna Simmons, 12; Kynndle Robinson, 11; and Kandace Robinson, 9, participate in many activities.

“They have been really supportive,” Robinson said, adding she also can talk to the staff in confidence.

This year, she and her children were picked to participate in the Post-Tribune’s Empty Stocking Fund.

Since 1998, the fund, in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Clubs in Lake and Porter counties, has provided financial assistance to families in need, raising tens of thousands of dollars and helping families give children a Christmas they might not have otherwise. The fund raised more than $4,300 last year for local families.

That’s a huge relief to Robinson, who said her children understand what she’s able to provide, given the family’s circumstances.

“It will help us out a whole lot, because I’m not making the money I was when I was teaching at the learning center,” she said. “It would just be a blessing, because I love to see my kids happy. When they’re happy, I’m happy.”
