PORTAGE — A fire at Breckenridge Apartments sent one person to the hospital early Saturday morning.
The Portage Fire Department was called to the apartment complex, located in the 3300 block of East Bend, around 5:30 a.m.
According to the report issued by the department, light smoke was present in the affected building’s hallway when firefighters arrived, and all residents of the building were evacuated.
An unidentified man was transported to Porter Regional Hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, according to Joe Calhoun, assistant EMS chief for Portage Fire, and was later transferred to Loyola University Burn and Shock Trauma Institute in Chicago.
One crew worked to quickly extinguish the fire found in a third-floor apartment, according to the report, while the other firefighters at the scene found the resident lying in the back of the apartment near the bedroom.
Calhoun said the state fire marshal will work with the Portage investigation team to find the cause of the fire.
