PORTAGE — A South Haven teen was killed after his moped collided with a sport utility vehicle about 9 p.m. Saturday on Willowcreek Road, near the Comfort Inn.
Police said Nathan Wheale, 17, of the 700 block of Baltimore Road, exited the Comfort Inn and drove east across Willowcreek Road when he was struck on the right side by a northbound SUV driven by Keith L. Sorensen, 67, of Crown Point.
The moped was pushed north by the SUV until it came to a stop in the left northbound lane. Police said Wheale’s helmet came off during the crash impact.
Sorensen told police the moped appeared suddenly in front of him and he was unable to stop before striking it.
Wheale was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital and Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., where he died about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
A spokesman said an autopsy would be conducted today.
