Your article on the Mahencia apartment building has really awakened a lot of memories from the 1960s. I attended Horace Mann High School and my grandmother lived in the Mahencia on the 5th Avenue side. Every day at 3 was my gym class and she would come out on her balcony and wave or she would tell us to pick up the pace. She was kind of our mascot for a period. It was really touching and we had a great laugh with her.
After the empty homes, used by drug dealers are demolished, guess where the drug dealers will go to? Yup, you guessed it, right into your neighborhood!
So the poor Gary firefighters are limited to one 90-day paid leave a year, and they are complaining? I think I have a headache and will apply for my 90-day leave today.
Now that the ISTEP scores are out all you parents who flocked to the charter schools because you thought your poor children would do better, well guess what? They’re not doing better. Send them back to the Gary schools. They may not be producing brain surgeons but at least they’re doing better than the charter schools.
