I don’t mind paying my fair share of taxes, but I do mind when it is wasted on ridiculous things. If taxes need to be raised for education, health care for children, the veterans or the elderly, I’m happy to step up.
All those years in the mills. All those years scraping ice off vehicles, shoveling out to get to work, braving below-zero temperatures, driving in blizzards to and from work. Now I’m retired and can say so what to the weather.
With my luck, I would win the lottery and get struck by lightning on the way to collect my prize. My ambulance would get stuck on a railroad crossing and get hit by a speeding train. After leaving the hospital seven months later, the time limit to redeem the ticket would be over.
We’re upset that Kmart is leaving Portage. Years ago, I shopped Kresge in downtown Gary and the Village. I still shop Kmart as a first choice; it will be missed. Meijer will be nice and all, but like a lot of us oldies-but-goodies, off they go.
I’m sick of seeing all these pretentious names that start with an initial: They always seem to be people in higher education or politics. Hyphenated names are starting to bug me, too.
I hope the smoking ban gets passed soon. Do you smokers realize how bad your clothes smell?
I also looked forward to Bruce Cameron’s column on Sundays and thought perhaps he was on vacation. Bruce, you will be missed. Thanks for the laughs.
