Cut sales tax rather than add Lake County income tax

Here we go again. The state is now crafting a bill to “entice” Lake County to enact a county-wide income tax. Under the guise of using the proposed tax for property tax relief and economic development, two non-Lake County politicians have co-sponsored a bill that they will not have to pay. In addition, part of the tax is earmarked for property tax relief! Think of that, a new tax to fund another tax.

Lake County has been having the local income tax rammed down our throat by the state. The council has made great strides in reducing costs and I believe we do not need yet another incentive not to invest in Lake County. I urge the council to stick to their stance that Lake County. If the state is so concerned about the economic development of Lake County, let’s cut the state sales tax from 7 percent to say 3 percent. That will incent businesses to invest all over the state.

Americans must learn to work together once again

There can be no greater shame on a country than to disrespect the office of the President of the United States. Never in U.S. history has a man been put under such a microscope where the only germs found active and dangerous are those called the GOP. White Americans must realize they are no longer a majority and it’s time we take that step toward an evolving society where change must come in order for America to work.

The GOP has made no secret about this matter. The GOP has fought every effort the president has set, not because they were bad ideas, but because he is black and has no place in the White House. Moreover, the GOP displays hostilities toward people of color in other nations as well. If America is to lead the world, it must first lead itself. That means consensus and compromises.

We in America promote and accept free and fair elections all over the world. Yet, we have white Americans who cannot accept the placing of a black man in the White House. We need to stop shouting about other nations’ human rights violations until we take care of our own.

Plan for removing trees at Cowles Bog is a good one

This is in response to your March 26 article on the controversy surrounding the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore plan to remove trees at Cowles Bog. The National Park Service should manage its resources in a way that protects them. They are not there to improve the view for its neighbors. Cowles Bog is an incredibly interesting and unique place and if the locals would get to know it, they would know the NPS management plan is the right thing to do.

Learn about your neighborhood. I guarantee you will learn to love the new view too.
