Emerson earned nickname
In his article about school nicknames, Mike Hutton overlooked a great nickname — the “Golden Tornado” of Gary Emerson.
Emerson’s nickname was the “Norsemen” until they played the Chicago city champions in football at Soldier Field. The Chicago Tribune’s sports editor, Arch Ward (who invented Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game), wrote that the players from Emerson, in their gold jerseys, were all over the field like a “golden tornado” as they routed the Chicago team.
Thus, the “Golden Tornado” became the nickname for Emerson’s football teams.
