wasting our money
(Editor’s note: Gary Community School Corp. has said it spent $8 million on the heating system at Roosevelt College & Career Academy in 2008.)
Has anyone calculated what $8 million can buy in terms of in-school faculty and staff? We used to have these in our building, but they had to be cut — and now I am beginning to understand why.
If the Gary Community School Corporation didn’t have to keep throwing money down the drain because Edison doesn’t seem to have someone who understands how to monitor the boiler equipment (I bet any beginning HVAC student could handle the job), about 200 faculty and staff could be “purchased” system wide for one year or at least 100 persons for 2 years. This number is not putting people in at anywhere NEAR top salaries. I would be happy for six teachers to help with classroom overcrowding, another counselor, a full-time nurse (I tell my students not to get sick on Tuesdays and Thursdays and every other Friday), another office personnel person, a couple more cafeteria matrons and paraprofessionals, and a dean of students to help with discipline.
And although I have never been one, I thought landlords are PAID for the use of the property. If the GCSC is the “landlord” for Roosevelt school, why are they doing all the paying and Edison Learning getting the money? For $8 million dollars, some pretty nice modern equipment could be purchased AND they could pay someone who would know what to do.
If the state took over Roosevelt, they should have taken it over lock, stock, AND barrel. It has done no better under Edison, with some VERY bright students, but somehow I feel, as a teacher who wasn’t qualified to teach for Edison (they didn’t even ask), it will be MY fault that THEY didn’t do the job they claimed they would do.
