That’s the message for folks heading to the Gary South Shore Air Show, who are urged to park in designated areas and not Gary’s Miller Beach neighborhood, when they are certain to return to an empty parking spot and a costly towing fee.
Premium on-site parking is available at Marquette Park for $20. Parking passes can be purchased at the gate or online through a link on the air show’s website, http://www.southshorecva.com/airshow/.
Free parking also will be available at Majestic Star Casino, with free shuttle service to the Air Show. Visitors can park at West Beach, in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, for $6, with a free shuttle to the show. Shuttle service begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday; the last shuttles to the parking lots will leave Marquette Park at 5 p.m.
Coolers are not permitted on the shuttles or at the Air Show; those taking the shuttles should bring only what they can carry in their laps because space is limited. All carry-in items and people are subject to search.
Speros Batistatos, president and chief executive officer of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority, which puts on the air show, emphasized that there is no parking on U.S. 20, and those attending the show shouldn’t be taken in by folks trying to sell parking spaces in the Miller Beach neighborhood.
The SSCVA is working with the city of Gary to bolster enforcement of the parking regulations in Miller Beach out of consideration for that neighborhood’s residents.
“We urge people to come to the authorized parking areas,” Batistatos said. “Do not give perfect strangers money to park on private property, because you will be towed.”
The only parking available for the Friday twilight show will be in the premium parking lot by the beach, for $20. Parking passes are available through the show’s website.
The shuttle will not run on Friday from Majestic Star or West Beach.
A trolley will be available for Miller Beach residents all three days of the show. The shuttle will run along Oak Street and stop at Warren, Vanderburg, Shelby, Ripley and Pike streets.
