LOWELL — It might have been April 1, but four pitchers weren’t fooling around on the mound as Lowell (2-0) edged Lake Central (2-1) 2-1 in seven innings.

Lake Central starting pitcher Lily Del Toro and Lowell starter Brandi Faverty gave up a run each through four innings on a brutally bitter evening for softball.

Lowell’s Brooke Cummins (1-0) entered the game to start the fifth inning and proved to be perfect, allowing no hits and striking out five in the final three innings. Lake Central ace Anabel Karberg (2-1) also came into the game in the fifth. Between Del Toro and Karberg, the Indians’ duo struck out 13 Red Devils in six innings.

Karberg got through the fifth and sixth but had to face the top of the Red Devil batting order in the seventh. The sophomore hurler got the first two hitters she faced before surrendering a double by Alyssa Pokropinski.

“Let’s just say Pokropinski is not our fastest runner,” Lowell coach Pete Iussig said. “We toyed with the idea of replacing her with a pinch runner. I told her so while she was out on second base and Lake Central had called a timeout. Alyssa kind of rolled her eyes like, ‘Are you sure you want to keep me in here?’ ”

The Red Devils had stranded at least one runner in six innings when Courtney Walter came to the plate with a clutch line shot over the center fielder’s head to win the game. The senior left fielder drove in both Red Devil runs.

“I just waited on my pitch, Walter said. “I got it — a fastball over the middle of the plate. This is a big win. Lake Central is a really good team.”
