American League All Star starter Max Scherzer and AL winning All Star pitcher Chris Sale faced off Monday at U.S. Cellular Field.

But Sale’s White Sox were no match for Scherzer’s Detroit Tigers.

The AL Central-leading Tigers backed Scherzer (14-1) with enough offense in a 7-3 victory despite losing slugger Miguel Cabrera to a hip flexor muscle problem in the fifth.

Cabrera appeared in pain rounding third in the fifth as he scored one of two unearned runs off Sale (6-9) in the inning.

He took his position at third in the bottom of the inning, but didn’t move well as Adam Dunn singled past third. Moments later he summoned the team trainer and manager Jim Leyland, leaving the game.

He is to be re-evaluated Tuesday.

The Tigers had seven hits off Sale ( 6-9 ), including a bases loaded single from Victor Martinez in the fifth and a solo home run in the seventh from Torii Hunter (8th).

They added three unearned runs in the ninth off the Sox bullpen, aided by two more Sox errors, including shortstop Alexei Ramirez’ second of the game.

The Sox had only four hits off Scherzer, including solo home runs by Dayan Viciedo (8th) and Conor Gillaspie (8th).

The Sox had a run in the ninth when Alex Rios doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk by reliever Bruce Rondon.

Scherzer worked eight innings, striking out five and walking none.

Sale struck out 11 in eight innings, the fifth time this season he struck out at least 10, and the ninth time in his career.
