1. Jay Cutler made mention last week that not everyone has bought into coach Marc Trestman’s system. Is that what you want your quarterback saying heading into training camp?
No, you keep your mouth shut. The coach knows what he’s doing. Do what the coach says, and you don’t worry about the other stuff. Play ball.
2. Many players have said Trestman is running the camp more like a college program, with conditioning tests and earlier practices than in the past. Do you think today’s athlete will be on board with that?
It doesn’t matter. Quit whining! He’s the coach. He’s hired to do the best job he can. Let him do it. Their job is to listen and be responsible to what he says.
3. Trestman believes in minimal hitting and tackling at training camp. Where do you stand on that?
I think you have to do that, I really do. Football is a contact sport, and you have to understand that. But you can’t get crazy about it. You know, these guys only have one body that has to last them for 16 games, so I think he’s on the right track.
4. With all the news coming out about the Patriots’ Aaron Hernandez and his background, do you think the NFL needs to do a better job of screening players before the draft?
There were some red flags on him, and they knew that. It is what it is. You gotta check him out, but sometimes you have to take a chance on a guy. You know you have a risk there, but you have to trust your scouting and your personnel department. That’s what their job is.
