Hammond’s Towle Theater will present the Indiana premiere of the dark comedy “Pursued by Happiness” from Sept. 6-22.
Written by Keith Huff and directed by Sherry Sweeney, “Pursued by Happiness” asks if people are pursuing happiness or if happiness, biologically speaking, is pursuing us?
An unexpected meeting between two 40-something biochemists touches off a whirlwind romance until it is time to meet the parents.
Then a series of shocking revelations test the new couple’s relationship.
The cast features Helen Young, Danny Heeter, James Kenjorski and Deb Brunette-Cairns.
The Towle Theater is at 5205 Hohman Ave., Hammond. Reservations or information: (219) 937-8780, towletheater.org.
The musical “Lucky Stiff” will be on stage at the Memorial Opera House from Sept. 6-15.
Written by Lynn Ahrens with music by Stephen Flaherty, “Lucky Stiff” will be directed by JoBeth Cruz with musical direction by Chris Stalbaum.
This murder mystery farce propels a mild-mannered English shoe clerk into a lunatic mix of a murdered Atlantic City croupier, his nearsighted jilted mistress, her henpecked brother and several hundred (offstage) dogs.
The clerk will inherit $6 million if he can successfully go on holiday with his uncle, the late departed croupier, in Monte Carlo for a week.
If the clerk doesn’t pull it off, the money goes to the Universal Dogs Home of Brooklyn.
The cast of “Lucky Stiff” includes Stephen Sienicki, Kelli Manigrasso, Trinidad Snider, Michael Glorioso, Matt Stinett, Adam Woolever, Stephanie Rice, Thomas Knoezer, Becky Bongard and Laura Simmons.
The Memorial Opera House is at 104 Indiana Ave., Valparaiso. Reservations or information: (219) 548-9137, mohlive.com.
The Unity Event will conduct auditions for Terrence McNally’s “Ragtime” from 6-10 p.m. Aug. 25 and from 7-10 p.m. Aug. 26.
Based on E.L. Doctorow’s novel of the same title, “Ragtime” is a sweeping musical that explores life in turn-of-the-century America as the nation grows with new ethnic, business and humanitarian challenges.
The Unity Event production will be directed by Matt Domasica with vocal direction by David Markley and Lisa Woodruff Hedin and musical direction by Troy Webdell.
“Ragtime” will have one performance on Nov. 9.
Although the six principal roles have been cast, the production team is looking to cast 32 more roles from featured actors to ensemble roles.
“Ragtime” will be a large-scale concert version production with a maximum of 15 rehearsals and a combined cast and orchestra of more than 200 people.
Those auditioning should prepare 16 bars of appropriate music not from the show.
The auditions and performances will be at Highland High School’s Monbeck Auditorium, 9135 Erie St. Information: firstname.lastname@example.org or by clicking the Auditions link at unityevent.webs.com.
