Mother Nature was quite unkind to Northwest Indiana football teams on Friday night.

Almost every game was postponed and rescheduled for Saturday at various times, though some games did get started Friday before lightning, then storms ended play.

Rensselaer at North Newton was one of the games that began quickly with the Bombers taking a 7-0 lead just three plays in despite kicking off. The host Spartans fumbled on their first offensive play, then Rensselaer’s Eli Isom scored two plays later on a 12-yard run. That game will continue at 10 a.m.

Another game that began, but was stopped and restarted was North Judson at Knox in which the Bluejays took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on an Erik Beckman 3-yard TD run. For more on that late game, visit posttrib.suntimes.com/sports.

Games rescheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday include LaPorte at Hobart, East Chicago at Lake Central, Whiting at Gavit, Griffith at Wheeler, Bowman at Lake Station, Andrean at Merrillville and Highland-Hammond, which will be moved to Highland’s field.

Munster at Chesterton will start at 11 a.m. with the junior varsity game to follow. Most of the rest of the JV games across the region have been canceled.

Culver Community will return to South Central nice an early for a 9 a.m. start.

Boone Grove at Bishop Noll will start at 5 p.m., while Lowell at Morton and Chicago Lindblom at West Side will start at 6 p.m.

Crown Point and Mishawaka also got started before being stopped with 4:58 left in the first quarter. Mishawaka was leading 7-0 after capitalizing on a Bulldogs’ turnover on their first possession.

“The Mishawaka coach didn’t want to come back,” CP athletic director Bill Dorulla said. “He wanted to stay, wait it out and finish the game, but you have to make the safety of the kids the first priority. Hey, I don’t blame him. They were playing well. If I were still coaching, I’d want to keep playing, too.”
