You’ve got to get a laugh from the TV commercial where Indiana state Rep. Ed Soliday’s wife claims that his support for public education is proven by the fact that, more than 50 years ago, he attended Valparaiso High School. Unfortunately for us, there’s nothing she can say about his support for public education over the past eight years. Ignorance is not bliss. Before you get on your soap box to complain, make sure you have the facts. There is nothing worse than a horde of know-it-alls who know nothing. How can you tell someone’s race by the comment they … ]]> Fri, 24 Oct 2014 03:27:34 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Oct. 23 ]]> Lead story image

I implore all voters in Lake County to vote all incumbents out of office. For just this election, vote straight Republican. Next election you can go back to voting straight Democrat. Let’s send a message to these incumbents that we are tired of their scandals and their tax hike that has proven to be unnecessary. I have two raccoons hiding underneath my front porch. They tear down my birdfeeders and chase away the squirrels. Trust me on this. Raccoons are nothing but very cute, very destructive rats. Wow, people have short memories. What is with all the raccoons in Hobart? As cute as they are, some are aggressive, rabid and damaging residents’ property. We are being invaded. Cry me a river about Republicans and Fox News. All Obama has done for six years now is blame Bush for all of his troubles. Two people on the Lake County Solid Waste District Board actually voted against ending the take-home car perk? Really? If the police would let everyone go who refuses to follow orders after a traffic stop, Timothy McVeigh would have never been apprehended. Reagan created the Taliban and Osama bin Laden. … ]]> Tue, 21 Oct 2014 20:36:02 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Oct. 19 ]]> Lead story image

Where are the honorable state Sen. Earline Rogers and state Rep. Charlie Brown on the issue of getting help for the Gary school system to pay its outstanding school bus service fees? If they cannot help, they should promote the process to allow the city to file for bankruptcy. The city needs to restructure. Quip: Flu kills tens of thousands every year and it’s not news. Retort: Evidently the quipster can’t read, hear or see the warnings, news reports or advertising on this issue. The mayor and her team have started meeting with the Gary police and fire unions. This is the first mayor I’ve seen taking action on a salary matter that is seven years overdue. Have to agree about the flu. I didn’t realize until a few years ago that tens of thousands of people die from it every year because it is never mentioned on the news. West Nile virus: two cases and it’s all over the news. Now Ebola? Why does the flu not matter? That is a lot of deaths. Here’s the deal with Republicans and Fox News. There is no reason for anyone other than the two people who are infected with Ebola to be concerned with getting it. What is more important is the flu, which killed 56,000 people in the U.S. last year alone. Get your flu shot. Gary schools Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt has the nerve accuse the school bus company of “attacking this community” because it can no longer afford to float the city’s past due bill of $3 million? How does this end up being “harassment and intimidation”? Exactly how does she think the company is supposed to pay its drivers, buy fuel … ]]> Fri, 17 Oct 2014 02:02:33 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Oct. 16 ]]> Lead story image

For those deeply concerned about the Ebola virus and who want to know more, there is no better book out there than “The Hot Zone” by Richard Preston. It’s by far the most terrifying yet informed book on the subject I’ve come across. Quip: Cops never know what out come of traffic stop will be. Retort: If cop has a backup (a partner), chance of positive outcome improves. Lake County Council President Ted Bilski indicated that a 3 percent pay raise was a “thank you to our employees.” Voting for it probably wasn’t that hard for him as he voted … ]]> Thu, 16 Oct 2014 02:07:04 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Oct. 15 ]]> Lead story image

Everybody needs to know that every time a cop pulls someone over and walks up to the car, he never knows if he’ll walk away alive. Because of this it’s best not to be a jerk. The Gary mayor is more interested in demolishing the Sheraton than she is in basic city services such as garbage collection and a permanent house for Fire Station 5. How can you cancel a basic service like garbage collection without a viable backup plan? And who are these people complaining about the garbage pickup? Democrats running for office on a national stage are running … ]]> Wed, 15 Oct 2014 02:06:49 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Oct. 13 ]]> Lead story image

I think if I get one more phone call or one more piece of mail I will either not vote or I will vote for the ones who did not bother me so much. I’ll be snuggling my 22-month-old closer as I pray for the families of these lost little ones and an end to the violence. Hey, guys. In Indiana, the law is if a cop tells you to get out of the car, you must do it. If you don’t, what happens isn’t going to be pretty. Does this country really celebrate the fact that agenda-driven lower courts … ]]> Mon, 13 Oct 2014 02:06:19 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Oct. 12 ]]> Lead story image

Did he think by not doing what all of the rest of us have to do when a cop asks you to do something that he’s special? Clogging the courts with stupid lawsuits is not the answer to your problem. Does any one know if the new Family Express gas station on U.S. 231 will have fast food attached? The play at Andrean High School was the best I have ever attended. Two outstanding warrants. No wonder Jamal did not want to show ID or get out of the car. The No. 1 pet peeve for Republicans is welfare, yet they are against raising the minimum wage to a livable wage that would get people off welfare. Go figure. The Gary airport pays four administrators over $100,000 each and has no airlines, the South Shore just hired a guy “given the gate” by Illinois Metra (of scandal fame) for over $172,000, and the worst school district in the state (Gary) pays its superintendent $170,000. Quip: Northbound I-65 ramp exit sign blown over at U.S. 30 and 109th Avenue for months. Retort: Indiana has a balanced budget and a budget excess locked up in Indianapolis, U.S. deficit at record low. Have a cup of tea and quit complaining. We have two lives — the life we learn with and the life after that. Suffering is what brings us toward happiness. Martin Luther King dreamed of the day when people would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Think about it. The northbound I-65 exit signs at U.S. 30 and 109th Avenue have been blown over since last winter. Why are they not fixed? That greeter at the Portage Walmart is a godsend. He promised my children he’d do a magic trick for them if they behaved while “shopping with Mom” and they were the best behaved I’ve seen them in a long time. They talked about it the whole way home. God bless all the hospice workers. I don’t know how you do it. Oh, boy. The Supreme Court denied the gay marriage appeal. If Illinois Gov. Quinn says he is the jobs governor, then Indiana Gov. Pence must be the jobs governor on steroids because many of the Illinois jobs are now moving to Indiana. Mine was one of them. Note to Bryan Gensel: Going after pot smokers may fill arrest quotas and bank accounts, but it does nothing to stem the real drug problems in Porter County — heroin and prescription drug abuse. It was heartwarming to read the article about Betty Lockett’s drive to get people to register, then actually take the time to vote. Waste Management did a fantastic job in picking up trash. Gary residents, prepare for a total breakdown in collection services. Whoever wants to make a million dollars should go into the shoe business and sell flip-flops to politicians. With all that’s going on in the world, do we not have more to worry about than wearing hats in public. Maybe the person wears it due to illness and has hair loss and they are embarrassed. I saw the best sign in a doctor’s office. He asks patients to please refrain from wearing cologne and perfume due to his allergies. I wish that sign could be posted in every public place. I gladly pay taxes in support of public education. Nobody ever asked me if our taxes should be spent on charter schools or vouchers. This decision should have been made by the voters. It is military policy to remove headgear when indoors. If they were my Joes, I’d have them in the front leaning rest until muscle failure.
