Wow. Gary schools had no problem laying off unneeded teachers but can’t seem to pull the plug on unnecessary food service workers. Again, wow. I don’t understand why American citizens continue to go overseas into countries that hate us or are involved in civil wars that are none of our business. There are more than enough people right here in America that they could be helping. Former Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White was removed from office for fraud. He is now writing a blog about which politicians are honest and which aren’t. Boy, that takes a lot of gall. … ]]> Thu, 28 Aug 2014 02:03:09 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Aug. 27 ]]> Lead story image

Thankfully, Jack Schaap’s appeal was denied. This man continues to prove that he thinks he is above the law. The idea of expecting a federal judge to equally blame his underage victim shows what a sociopath he is. I like most of Mr. Niedner’s columns. I just wish he and so many others didn’t feel the need to jump to conclusions on what might or might not have happened to cause the death of Michael Brown. Maybe it would have been better if we all would keep an open mind until all the facts are in. I expected better from … ]]> Wed, 27 Aug 2014 02:03:32 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Aug. 25 ]]> Lead story image

The GOP and our governor are big on adoption, but it’s mostly talk. Adoptive families had to file a class action lawsuit to get a tax credit that was promised them. That doesn’t sound like Indiana is the “most adoption friendly state.” What a great column from Fred Niedner on three deaths, particularly his musings about the incredibly gifted Robin Williams. Sorry, all police officers deserve respect. We live in a society of disrespectful people that think they are above the law. They only want a police officer around when it is to their benefit. Congrats to Jackie Robinson West … ]]> Tue, 26 Aug 2014 16:53:56 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Aug. 24 ]]> Lead story image

I just love watching the Little League World Series, but I’m a little Mo Ne Davised out. Enough already. The Highland Town Theatre should be torn down and rebuilt exactly the way it was. No expanding the theater. Cedar Lake is a great town to live in. But there are many homeowners who refuse to do basic maintenance, like mowing and repairing roofs and give the whole town a black eye. Code enforcement needs to step it up, big time. Flowers are pretty. The folks who participated in the Rally for Ferguson need to check themselves into Realville. They don’t … ]]> Sun, 24 Aug 2014 02:02:40 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Aug. 23 ]]> Lead story image

The problem that we see with police officers is that nobody respects them, but everybody wants the police to show them respect. Judge Cappas is proving to be the judge to watch in Lake County. An angry woman from Hobart slammed the gate after being given a year in jail. The judge found her in contempt and added two additional months. I have to admire Indiana for allocating its Bank of America windfall to schools, taxpayers and homeowners. Illinois took its $200-plus million and put it into the corrupt state employee pension funds. Instead of fixing the problem, they just … ]]> Sat, 23 Aug 2014 02:02:59 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Aug. 22 ]]> Lead story image

Which government is trying to nullify the Second Amendment? Maybe the guns caused the local police with tanks. What’s next? I hope some sane gun laws. New Prairie is not a local team. The local radio show should stop paying homage to a coach who is closer to South Bend than the region. The biggest problem with high school football polls is they don’t take into account the strength of schedule. It’s all the win-loss record. A winning 4A school with a 1A and 2A schedule is not that good of a team. A small black and white dog was … ]]> Fri, 22 Aug 2014 14:06:17 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Aug. 21 ]]> Lead story image

Thank you to Judge George Paras for his common-sense ruling on the right-to-work case. Watching the Little League World Series is such a thrill. It makes me remember why I love baseball so much. Government wanting to nullify Second Amendment, local police forces with tanks. Hmmm ... I wonder what’s next. Leave Cubs fans alone already. If your team loses every darn game or wins every game, and you are a fan, it’s nobody’s business but yours. This is getting silly. It’s sports, not war. Isn’t it time that we start filing class-action lawsuits against all companies that allow our … ]]> Thu, 21 Aug 2014 02:02:00 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Aug. 20 ]]> Lead story image

A young Gary teenager arguing with his mother had the audacity to challenge a police officer to fight him. Why doesn’t anyone respect the police? I wouldn’t have their job if they paid me a million bucks a year. Not all of us profess to be a Christian and not all of us are as greedy as you state. I believe in a helping hand when needed — a hand up for the needy not the greedy. How many out there cheat to collect what they can from the government because they can. We have all heard or seen tales … ]]> Wed, 20 Aug 2014 02:02:28 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Aug. 18 ]]> Lead story image

So far, I haven’t seen 80-year-old ladies getting knocked to the ground and robbed in Crown Point or shootings at Merrillville night clubs committed by illegal immigrants. The difference in people who work and those who don’t work is amazing. I can’t wait to see all those liberal-minded, middle-class voters’ faces who found it stylish to vote for Mr. Obama when they see their monthly insurance premiums skyrocket and their deductibles go to $20,000 per year. I don’t see how Bruce Rauner can solve the Illinois financial crisis by lowering taxes. Until the public pension mess is fixed, nothing can … ]]> Mon, 18 Aug 2014 02:01:51 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Aug. 17 ]]> Lead story image

Any politician who refuses to release their taxes is hiding something. Don’t we already have enough crooked politicians? (Re: Robin Williams) It is sad to lose such talent and life. Why does TV have to be so graphic concerning his manner of death? Couldn’t they just have said he died at home? Why so public about all the details? Before I started my rounds this morning, I saw on the news that the price of oil and the wholesale price of gasoline were down because of reduced demand. As I headed through Valpo, I saw the big-box stations raise the … ]]> Sun, 17 Aug 2014 02:02:09 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Aug. 16 ]]> Lead story image

I believe dental maintenance is a personal responsibility and should be handled by the individual. There is a lot of evidence that fluoride added to the water has ill health effects aside from the fact that it’s unethical because it’s being provided without informed consent. Dental health should be between the patient and their dentist as well as our lord and savior, Comrade Obama. Only liberal socialists try to poison the very populace that sustains them with tax revenue. A long time ago, on Oct. 14, 2003, I had some South Side friends, Sox fans, who gave me hell when Moises Alou didn’t come away with the catch and the Cubs unraveled. Well, you see, Sox fans, it can happen to anyone at any time. (The Sox lost) 7-1 (Wednesday) after the dispute at the plate. I like (manager) Robin (Ventura), but come on ... They did such a nice job paving Cline Avenue; when are they going to finish the north end? I have read some really ignorant rants in Quickly but one on the very top of the list is about supporting one’s parents on Social Security. They paid into that fund. It is their money. Refuse to work? I don’t think so. Get your head on straight. Absolutely loved the comment about supporting your parents so that they don’t have to depend on Social Security. That was true and funny. Aug. 8 is way too early for kids to be back in school. It’s still summer for crying out loud. Could not agree more. Let’s concentrate on someone’s credentials and not them being the first woman, black, Hispanic, Asian or whatever. I think that is very divisive. Only the credentials matter. From my paycheck, 6.2 percent is a deduction for Social Security and 1.45 percent for Medicare. My employer contributes an additional 6.2 percent and 1.45 percent on my behalf. So stop your whining that Social Security is a burden to taxpayers. All working people and businesses pay into it. I hope to collect mine when the time comes. Unless it is a dire emergency, do not call my house … ]]> Sat, 09 Aug 2014 23:17:20 -0500 <![CDATA[ Quickly, Aug. 9 ]]> Lead story image

What has happened to Mayor Tom McDermott’s delusions of grandeur? Did he ever really think he had a chance of being our governor? Loretta Rush was the right pick for the next chief justice of the Indiana Supreme Court. I just wish the focus would be on her credentials instead of her gender. To the reader calling Obamacare socialism: Better get rid of the VA and Medicare. Those socialist programs have no place in your country. Not everyone is a radical Republican or radical Democrat. Richard Nixon once proposed a health care reform plan that was almost identical to the ACA. The individual mandate was supported by the conservative Heritage Foundation for a long time. We should be calling the ACA either “Nixoncare” or “Heritagecare.” I think we should cede Texas back to Mexico. The mineral and agricultural wealth would help the Mexican economy, and we wouldn’t have to put up with Texas’ nonsense anymore. It’s a win-win. To the reader upset by those who describe the Affordable Care Act as Obamacare, I have two things to say to you: Why is it called the … ]]> Fri, 08 Aug 2014 02:01:22 -0500
