Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies forecasts double-digit gains in home improvement spending for 2014, according to its Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity. Third quarter spending in 2014 on home improvement is estimated to hit $158.9 billion-a jump of more than 14 percent from the same time in 2013.
If windows made it onto your to-do list, you'll have plenty of reasons to feel great about your choice once the installation is done. Here we list four benefits for installing replacement windows and skylights:
1. Better energy efficiency
If your windows are 20 years old or more, it's almost certain that you're wasting valuable energy in your home. The non-profit Efficient Widows Collaborative (EWC) estimates that by using low-E coatings that reject solar heat and reduce air leakage, consumers can save anywhere from 16 to 43 percent over other types of windows, depending on the season.
2. Improved comfort
High-performance windows with new glazing technologies not only reduce energy costs, but they also make homes more comfortable, according to the EWC. In winter, new windows will feel warner and virtually eliminate drafts. In summer, solar radiation and heat-gain drop sharply, while still providing sufficient light.
3. Reduced fading
Whether it's your carpets, artwork or curtains, sunlight can rob them of their original contrast and color. Specially coated new windows can reduce ultraviolet radiation, the main source of fading, by up to 75 percent. Triple low solar gain, low-E windows with argon gas will do an especially great job.
4. A fresh look
From cracked-wood sills to staining and cracks, old windows rob your home of its beauty and radiance. A sophisticated window replacement will add a clean freshness in a way that's environmentally responsible and undeniably vibrant.
