Skube steps up with Samplawski sitting at Loyola

Loyola’s Abby Skube has recovered from a slow start to average 15.5 points over the last seven games. The former Chesterton star scored in double figures five times in that stretch, including a 18-point binge against in an upset victory at Wright State over the weekend.
Teammate Lisa Samplawski (Portage) leads the Horizon League in 3-point shooting with a 45.3 percent, but sat out that game.
Nick Curosh (Clark) is Wabash’s leading rebounder (6.6 rpg). The 6-9 senior is shooting 64.5 percent from the field. Sophomore Pete Nicksic (Andrean) came up with 11 points in a victory over arch-rival DePauw. Coming off the bench, he is averaging 3.3 points and rebounds for the Little Giants, who are 15-6 (7-5, North Coast Conference).
St. Joseph’s Mike Lipton reached double figures in losses against Division-II top-10 opponents Southern Indiana and Kentucky Wesleyan. He chalked up 22 points.
St. Xavier’s Brad Karp (Valparaiso) and Taylor’s Tom Peller (Chesterton) have been named to the Academic All-District III team.
Karp notched a 39-point, 20-rebound effort in his most recent game. The sophomore guard has received CCAC player of the week honors three times.
Peller has started every game for Taylor (16-8). He recently popped for 14 in a victory at Bethel and is averaging 9.7 points.
Rockford’s Regents snapped a 14-game skid at Aurora’s expense with the help of Britney Curry’s seventh double-double. The 5-8 senior bagged 11 points and rebounds. She added six assists.
Football
St. Joseph’s coach Corey Sanders bagged nine players from Indiana in his recruiting class, including kicker Gavin Voss (Wheeler) and linebacker Giorgio Karallas (Michigan City).
Marian coach Ted Karras Jr. harvested 31 recruits, including offensive linemen Sean Matheny (Chesterton) and Luke Mitrisin (Lowell), running back Dionte Day (Merrillville) and a
Michigan City tandem of Joshua Gordeck (tight end) and Trent Ormsby (defensive end).
Indianapolis coach Bob Bartolomeo named linebacker Jake Grossnickle (Valparaiso) as one of his first eight signees.
Tennis
Indiana freshman Katie Klyczek (Munster/Andrean) is off to a 6-1 start in singles, including five victories in straight sets. That follows an 8-1 record in the fall campaign. Klyczek also teams up with Carolyn Chapos in doubles.
Swimming
Notre Dame’s Chris Johnson (St. John/Lake Central) was clocked in a winning time of 56.20 in the 100 breaststroke at the Shamrock Invitational. He also teamed up with Bill Bass (Chesterton) to help the 400 freestyle relay team place third.
Wrestling
Eric Roach (Crown Point) is wrestling unattached at Indiana.
Competing in the 149-pound class, the freshman is 8-5.
General
Highland native Doug Boersma has been named director of sports medicine at Purdue. The 37-year-old Purdue grad was plucked from Bowling Green State where he served in the same capacity as well as athletic trainer for football since 2005. Boersma also worked at Notre Dame for four years.
