Girls basketball: Lowell tops Boone Grove after slow start

Updated: February 24, 2013 6:37AM

VALPARAISO — Maybe it was the ongoing absence of Mackenzie Kreutz. Or maybe it was a hangover from a rough Lake Central game last week.

But Lowell fought through a sluggish night to capture a 45-42 victory over Boone Grove.

“Boone Grove’s a hard place to play,” Lowell coach Matt Welsh said. “They just won the PCC Kup, which is a hard thing to do, and I don’t think our girls really understood that.”

The Red Devils found themselves down 21-13 at the half as the Wolves put together a stat line that any girls basketball coach would love. Boone Grove dished out eight assists as a team on its nine field goals and turned it over 10 times. By contrast, Lowell had two assists against 13 turnovers.

Lowell (14-3) finally turned it around in the second half, starting with a pair of Kalyne Godbolt free throws and then a 3-pointer from Godbolt. Godbolt next found Katie Bobos underneath for a layup. She was fouled and converted the three-point play. One possession later, Bobos converted another three-point play to give Lowell the lead at 24-23. Bobos scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the third quarter.

Boone Grove (13-6) wasn’t finished, though. The Wolves took their final lead late in the game at 41-40 when Paige Aguilera stole the ball and found Nicole Malouhos for a layup. Boone Grove’s Sarah Steinhilber followed that with a free throw, but Godbolt assisted yet again, this time on Sydney Barta’s field goal to tie the game. Barta then delivered two free throws to give Lowell the victory.

“We just let it slip away,” said Wolves coach Candy Wilson. “We got a little complacent in that third quarter and let Bobos take over. We have to just finish the game.”

Aguilera led Boone Grove with 14 points and Faith Dammerell added nine points and five assists. Godbolt finished with nine points for the Red Devils while Barta had eight.
