Is Derrick Rose taking too much heat for delaying his return to the Bulls?
DITKA: Nobody knows their body except the individual that has the injury. It’s cute to say this, or the doctor says that, but if he doesn’t feel better, then there’s no use in coming back. If he does it again or irritates that leg again, then he would be finished. So, I can understand his feelings. When he’s ready, he’ll be back.”
Do you think people in the United States will ever embrace the World Baseball Classic the way it has taken off in other countries?
DITKA: We have our own league, and we have our own World Series, so I don’t think we’ll ever embrace it like Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic or those countries. But I think it’s a great thing. The thing it shows me is that there are so many good baseball players around the world. Whether you go to Japan or Venezuela or anywhere, there’s just a lot of good baseball players.
Jay Cutler will be a free agent after next season. Will that be a good thing for the Bears?
DITKA: Jay’s future depends a lot on how he plays this year, really. I don’t know why he’d want to move around, maybe he does. He’s been in Denver already. I think playing in Chicago is the greatest job in the NFL. You play well in Chicago, you win in Chicago, you write your own ticket, and you’ll be around for a long, long time. I think when the Bears evaluate everything, he’s the guy they want. I think this year will have a little bit to do with it. They’ll pay for him and try to keep him.
What did you think of the Bears’ two big moves in free agency, signing tight end Martellus Bennett and left tackle Jermon Bushrod?
DITKA: It’s not too complicated. They saw what they needed and they went out and got it. If you have holes in your offense, you have to plug people in. Now, how well they play is up to them. These two kids are good football players. I think they’re really going to help them. They’re going to help balance the offense and take some pressure off the defense.
