St. John girls eighth graders win basketball title

The Evangelist School in St. John on Sunday was crowned the Diocese of Gary Catholic Youth Organization’s eighth-grade girls champions.
Coached by Tim McCrea and Rich Nicpon, the SJE squad defeated the St. Mary (Griffith) School Wildcats 35-30 in the finals. St. John’s players include: Aileen Boyle, Brittany Grooms, Sarah Jackson, Kelly Joy, Korie McCrea, Danielle Moynihan, Mira Nicpon, and Elizabeth Polak.
St. Thomas More School of Munster prevailed against Nativity of Our Savior School of Portage, 38-36, in the seventh-grade division.
In sixth-grade championship game, Valparaiso’s St. Paul School doubled up Schererville’s St. Michael School 18-9.
The fifth-grade title game between St. Mike’s and St. Mary (Crown Point) went to the Schererville team, 24-19.
Fieldhouse-Merrillville to conduct spring basketball sessions: A vacation from the classroom does not mean down time for the dedicated athlete at the Fieldhouse-Merrillville (899 E. 99th Court.) The mega gymnasium will roll out a series of spring break instructional sessions led by Pro U, starting Monday.
Fundamentals of Basketball and Strictly Shooting School will be offered in four sessions for boys and girls in grades 3 to 12. Each course will consist of three days of individual instruction on various aspects of basketball offense, especially shooting.
Fees are $50 per session, or $45 for each of two courses taken on the same dates. Siblings can be added on for $30 per person. The special team rate for 10 players is $400. For information, call 738-2424, or visit thefieldhouse-merrillville.com.
