Looking more like an ace than the fifth starter, Carlos Villanueva pitched another impressive seven innings for the Cubs to beat the Texas Rangers 6-2 in a game that looked for much of the day like it wouldn’t be played because of flood conditions in the surrounding area Thursday.

Anthony Rizzo and Alfonso Soriano hit back-to-back homers in the Cubs’ four-run third inning to support Villanueva (1-0), who allowed just a pair of runs on solo home runs by Ian Kinsler in the fourth and Nelson Cruz in the seventh.

The win salvaged a split in a series shortened to two games by Wednesday’s rainout at Wrigley. The Cubs were rained out twice during the scheduled 10-game homestand, finishing 3-5 as they head to Milwaukee Friday to open a three city trip.
